According to testimony in the Petition to Deny KYLD and KMEL's radio station licenses, KYLD hired DJ Rick Delgado, even after he was fired by New York City's Hot 97 for airing The Tsunami Song, which mocked the victims of the 2004 Tsunami that caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of South Asians.
Song lyrics included the following:
And all at once you can hear the screaming chinks
And no one was saved from the wave
There were Africans drowning, little Chinamen swept away
You can hear God laughing, 'Swim you bitches, swim'
The petition states that KMEL excludes local artists and musicians, the voices of youth organizers and people of color. KMEL refuses to air public service announcements from community groups.
It also details many illegal and unethical stunts performed by DJs and programmers, some of which resulted in fines and jail time - one of the DJ's was sentenced to 45 days in San Mateo County jail. One KYLD DJ called a woman's home and impersonated a Kaiser Permanante Hospital doctor. While on the air, the DJ accused the woman of abusing her daughter since she was a little girl. This led to a lawsuit that was later settled for an undisclosed sum.
