On Thursday Dec 3, 2009, Be The Media publisher David Mathison will speak at the United Nations. He will open the conversation with a presentation titled "Social Media and the UN - Engaging the Public."
Mathison joins speakers Sree Sreenivasan, Dean of Academic Affairs at Columbia University Journalism School, and Blog Talk Radio founder and CEO Alan Levy.
The event is hosted by the UN's Department of Public Information (DPI).
"The DPI helps non-governmental organizations gain access to and disseminate information about United Nations issues so the public can better understand the aims and objectives of the organizations."
Participants include representatives from the UN, UNICEF, UNDP, UNCTAD, UNIFEM, the World Bank, and the World Food Program, among others.
After the event, Mathison was thanked by Kiyo Akasaka, the UN's Under Secretary General for Communications and Public Information (Full letter from USG Akasaka here):
"I write to express my appreciation for your participation in yesterday's meeting on social media and for your valuable contribution to our efforts to embrace new media at the United Nations.
I note with interest your innovative ideas, such as harnessing the willingness of the public to work on special projects.
As you have rightly pointed out, people are eager to find connections and to align themselves with a worthy cause.
This, indeed, carries a great potential, and I hope that in the coming months we are successful in translating those ideas into action."- Kiyo Akasaka, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, United Nations
Participants were given complimentary copies of Be The Media!
