Jill has released seven studio albums of original music, three EPs, and a greatest hits compilation.

In January 2008, Sobule launched a website called Jill's Next Record seeking to raise $75,000 through fan donations in order to create a new studio album.

Just two months after the launch of the site, Sobule reached her target through micro-donations from over 500 people.

Her subsequent album, California Years, was released in April, 2009 on Sobule's own label, Pinko Records.

We'll discover how Jill built and maintains her fan base, and how she was able to encourage them to fund her new work.

David Mathison interviews Michelle Shocked and Chuck Leavell

This week's guests are singer-songwriter Michelle Shocked and keyboardist extraordinaire Chuck Leavell. In a monumental mid-1990s case, Michelle sued her label, Mercury-Polygram, for $1 million, citing a violation of the 13th Amendment, the constitutional right that prohibits slavery.
 
In an out-of-court settlement, Shocked was released from her contract, and was given control of the masters of her songs. Michelle now owns her entire catalog of 100+ songs over her 23-year career.
 
Michelle is a pioneer of the burgeoning "artists' rights" model that we explore in depth in Be The Media.
 
Our second guest, Chuck Leavell, has played keyboard with everyone from the Allman Brothers Band, the Rolling Stones, Train, The Black Crowes, Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, and George Harrison, among many others.
